An Original Vintage Linenbacked World War I Poster (measures 22" x 34 3/4" [56 x 88 cm]) (Learn More)

Be a U.S. Marine, the 1918 U.S. World War I (WWI) Marine Corps recruiting poster ("First in the Fight - Always Faithful") featuring James Montgomery Flagg art of a Marine holding a pistol against the backdrop of the U.S. flag. Note that there are at least two versions of this poster. There is one with a tagline above the title and one with solely the title. But there are also different sizes of this poster (not surprising because this would have been printed multiple times even in 1918, and probably printed again multiple times in the next few years) The Library of Congress calls the tagline version "1922?", but it calls the version without the tagline a "1918?" poster, so we can't date any example of this poster precisely, but they surely date from between the time the U.S. entered World War I to the first few years after World War I ended. If anyone knows more about this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had thumb tack holes and pinholes around the edges, with a few scattered in the image. There were some tears by some of the holes caused by rough removal of the thumb tacks. There were some scuffs scattered throughout the image, including some in the face and figure of the soldier. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was well backed, but very little restoration was performed (although just backing the poster has reduced how noticeable the above defects are).
