Heute Versorgt Amerika die Osterreichischen Kinder (literally translates to "Today, America is Taking care of Austria's Children."), the circa 1919 Austrian post-World War I (WWI) poster featuring Bernd Steiner art of Uncle Sam feeding a child on his lap as women, children, and invalids gather around a food-laden table. It was created right after the end of World War I, when American charities made huge efforts to help war orphans of all countries in war torn Europe, including Austria. However, we cannot find much information on this particular program. It may be related to the Save the Children Fund. The Save the Children Fund was founded in 1919 in England by Eglantyne Jebb and her sister Dorothy Buxton. It was an effort to alleviate starvation of children in Germany and Austria-Hungary during the Allied blockade in World War I (which continued after the Armistice). The sisters originally joined the Fight the Famine Council (which was started earlier in 1919). The Council was created in order to put political pressure on the British government to end the blockade. However, the sisters decided to start a new organization which separated itself from the politics of the Council. If anyone knows more about this poster or the organization, please e-mail us and we will post it here.
