An Undated (probably 1960s) Re-Release Theatrical Linenbacked British Quad Movie Poster (BQ; Quad Crown; measures 30" x 40" [76 x 102 cm]) (Learn More) The Phantom of the Opera, the 1962 Terence Fisher English Hammer horror mystery crime thriller ("The greatest Thrill Classic of All Time!"; "The most unusual tale of terror - and love ever told!"; "From the classic novel by Gaston Leroux"; "Out of the Hell-Fire of Horror Unimaginable rises the figure of terror incarnate"; "Once in every generation comes a tale of such classic horror that even its terror fascinates... while it holds you forever captive with its Frightening Power!!!"; there was a silent version with Lon Chaney Sr., a 1940s version with Claude Rains, and of course, the hit Broadway musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber!) starring Herbert Lom (in the title role as The Phantom), Heather Sears (as Christine), Thorley Walters, Michael Gough, Edward de Souza, and Sonya Cordeau NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have never auctioned this poster before! Not only that, but we can't find any auction that has! That creates a difficulty, which is that the bottom blank border is slightly trimmed (between 1/4" and 1/2"), but we don't have a complete image to compare it to. It appears that the poster originally measured 31" x 40", which is odd, and perhaps it was incorrectly trimmed, with wider than normal top and bottom blank borders. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Also note that this is a "country of origin" poster for this English movie! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. As noted above, the bottom blank border was slightly trimmed, but even still, the poster measures 30 1/2" x 40", so perhaps the trimming was so that it would fit in a frame. It had tiny paper loss at the crossfolds and some tiny tears and smudges on parts of several folds. It had pinholes and tears around the edges, with small paper loss in the bottom right blank corner. Someone once put tape on the back of border tears in four places, and the tape darkened and bled through to the front, and it is into the red background in the two areas in the upper right border. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above. Learn More about condition grades
