An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Title Lobby Card (measures 11" x 14") (Learn More)

The Day the Earth Stood Still, the classic 1951 Robert Wise science fiction (sci-fi) alien-contact thriller ("From out of space.... a warning and an ultimatum!"; "Strange power from another planet menaces the Earth!"; from the story by Harry Bates; about a super intelligent alien visiting the Earth, and mankind mistrusts him without reason; he is able to "pass" as a human, and he visits the world's greatest scientist, and when he is injured and taken to a hospital, he is rescued by his robot Gort) starring Michael Rennie (as Klaatu), Patricia Neal, Hugh Marlowe, Sam Jaffe, Billy Gray, Frances Bavier, and Lock Martin (as Gort the Robot). Note that the unusual music heard in this movie was achieved through the use of the musical instrument called a theramin, and audiences loved the eerie sounds it made, and it became standard in many science fiction movies thereafter to use this instrument in the same way!

Condition: good to very good. It is hard to believe, but someone long ago set a glass down on top of this lobby card, leaving a circular ring of water staining, and they then moved the glass twice so that there are three interlocking rings! Obviously, this was surely done many decades ago when the card was considered to be of little value. One of the rings is entirely in the background area to the right of the giant hand, one is mostly in the background but the bottom of it extends into the girl's arm and the tip of Gort's shoulder, and the third extends into the bottom of the girl's face and into the top of her neck and chest. There are some other brown water stains in the top right corner extending into the end of the tagline and the edge of the background, but mostly in the blank border. There were pinholes in the left and right ends of the top border, in the center of the top border, and three at the end of the top tagline. Someone put a piece of brown paper tape across the back of the entire length of the top blank border, and added two extra larger pieces of tape on the back of the top corners and also a 1 1/2" square piece of tape on the back of the bottom left corner (apparently to strengthen it as there was a faint diagonal crease in that corner). The right border has many small tears and tiny creases in the extreme right edge of the card in the bottom 8". There are some creases and smudges around the edges of the card. Other than the amateur tape described above, this card has had no restoration whatsoever. I would think there is a good chance a restorer could remove or greatly reduce the three circular water stains through chemical means, and could likely do the same with the water stains in the top right corner. If so, then the restorer could then also repair the minor border defects (removing the tape from the back) and the card would look fantastic and it would have little paint restoration in the image. Even if the water stains can only be partially removed through chemical means, the card can still look great, although there would be some paint restoration in that area. Please do not bid on this great card unless you have read the above carefully, and are willing to accept the card as it is or to pay to have professional restoration performed!
