An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded German Movie Poster (measures 37 1/4" x 56" [95 x 142 cm]) (Learn More)

Der Zerbrochene Krug (released in English-speaking countries as "The Broken Jug"), the 1937 Gustav Ucicky & Emil Jannings German judicial legal law melodrama (about a judge in a small town who gets drunk one night, and stumbles into the home of a beautiful woman who is with her lover, and he not only gets beaten, but he also breaks a valuable jug and loses his judicial wig, and the next day, he must go to court where everybody is talking about the incident of the night before, not realizing he was the intruder!; based on the play by Heinrich von Kleist with the screenplay written by Thea von Harbou) starring Emil Jannings, Angela Salloker, Elisabeth Flickenschildt, Paul Dahlke, Friedrich Kayssler, and Max Gulstorff. Note that this is a "forbidden" movie. This refers to movies that were made in Germany between 1933 and 1945, during the time the Nazis were in power in Germany. These movies are considered to be propaganda movies, which glorify the Nazi regime and their ideals. Immediately after World War II, a list of many movies that were made between 1933 and 1945 was created, and those movies were not allowed to be shown at any time in Germany or Austria. Over the next decade, some of those movies (including this one) were taken off the list so that they are allowed to be shown (but rarely are), and those movies are known as "forbidden movies", because even though they can now be shown, they could not be shown at all in the years right after World War II. The remaining 40 or so movies are known as "conditional" movies, because they are still not allowed to be shown in Germany or Austria, even in the present day, with the sole exception being when they are shown in an educational context, like at a university, and a speaker talks before and after the movie. All of the "forbidden" movies and "conditional" movies glorify Nazism in some respect, or they were created by directors or featured actors who were prominently associated with the Nazi party.

Artist: Karl Trieb
Important Added Info: Note that we have never auctioned a poster (nor seen any other movie paper) from this movie as "pre-War" movie posters from Germany are virtually nonexistent (it seems likely that most were destroyed during the huge paper shortages that occurred during World War II). As is typical of pre-World War II German posters, the poster has a seal in the printing near one corner which gives the date of "23 SEP 1937")! Note also that this is a rare "country of origin" poster for this German movie!

Condition: poor. The poster is in much lesser condition. There are several defects scattered along the edges and foldlines/crossfolds and there are several significant areas of foldline and crossfold separation (the poster is completely separated along several folds and it is currently in six pieces). The poster paper itself has become somewhat brittle with age, making the poster difficult to handle without creating further fold and edge damage. There are MANY other defects that can be clearly seen in our super-sized image. Please see our super-sized image to get a good sense of the condition of this item prior to placing a bid and please do not bid unless you can accept the defects described above, or you are willing to pay to have them properly restored.
