Date Sold 6/11/2020 Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. 8 Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Cards (LCs; measure 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) His Private Secretary, the 1933 Phil Whitman romantic comedy ("An original story by Lew Collins") starring Evalyn Knapp, John Wayne, Alec B. Francis, Natalie Kingston, Reginald Barlow, and Arthur Hoyt. Note that John Wayne had had only bit parts in movies in the late 1920s, but then got his big break with "The Big Trail" in 1930, with a starring role. But that was not the success it was hoped to be, and he had only small roles for the next two years. Then he signed with First National to star in a series of B-westerns. He appeared in a few non-westerns, in small roles, and tiny Showmen's Pictures gave him the lead role in this romantic comedy! Apparently, Wayne realized that he was not to make his mark as a non-western actor, for soon after, he signed a contract with Monogram Pictures, making many westerns for them (and later Republic Pictures) before getting his next giant break when Gary Cooper turned down the lead role in "Stagecoach", which Wayne played to perfection, and which finally gave him major stardom after so many years in B-pictures! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that lobby cards from this early John Wayne starring romantic comedy are extremely rare! They were made by tiny Showmen's Pictures, and were only made in a green color. They are SO rare that people used to tell me that there was only a 4-card set on the movie, but this IS the full set of eight cards for the movie! Note also that John Wayne is pictured prominently on six of the cards! Condition: good to very good. Each card has slightly darkened around the edges, and several cards have minor edge defects including small creases and a few tiny tears or slight tattering. The card pictured to the lower right of the title card has paper loss in two corners, and a crease at lower right that has been repaired with tape from the back. One has paper loss in the upper left edge and a piece of tape on the back of one edge (not put there for any restoration purpose). The title card has a small piece of tape on the back of the lower left corner repairing a small tear. Other than the few defects described above, the cards are in pretty nice condition and display well! Learn More about condition grades
