An Undated (probably 1940s) Re-release Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked French One-Panel "Grande" Movie Poster (1p; measures 47 1/4" x 63" [120 x 160 cm]) (Learn More)

Toboggan, the 1934 Henri Decoin French boxing sports romantic love triangle melodrama (about a washed up 40 year-old former world champion boxer who makes a comeback for a sexy dancer, but she is two-timing him, and she brings her boyfriend into the arena during the climactic boxing match, and she waits to see what happens with the fight, because if the boxer wins, she will go with him, and if he loses, she will go with her boyfriend, and when the boxer is KO'ed, she makes up her mind!) starring Georges Carpentier (real life heavyweight boxing champion), Arlette Marchal, Paul Amiot, John Anderson, and Raymond Cordy. Note that director Henri Decoin was a major believer in realism in movies and tried to cast non-actors whenever possible. He had written a novel about boxing in 1930, and he wanted to make a movie on that subject, and he was able to do so because Georges Carpentier, who had been the French heavyweight champion (and world lightweight champion), had lost to Jack Dempsey in 1921, at which point his career went downhill, but he still had a great deal of savings. But eight years later, he lost all his money in the 1929 Stock Market Crash, and he was reduced to playing vaudeville. Because this was a movie being made in France, it allowed Carpentier to return "home", so he agreed to play the lead in this incredibly depressing movie, which was largely based on his own life! Because Carpentier was a real life boxer, he naturally was able to do his own boxing scenes, and the producer of the movie interwove footage of Carpentier from his actual matches into the film. Note that the title "Toboggan" refers to what was apparently a then-current American idiom which people used to describe someone whose career was headed downhill (it makes sense, but it obviously didn't last long!). This is a fascinating movie that seems to be almost completely forgotten today, except by major film buffs or major fight fans.

Important Added Info: Note that this is a "country of origin" poster for this French movie!

Condition: good to very good. The poster had creases, tears, and several areas of paper loss on parts of some foldlines and paper loss at some crossfolds. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects. Note that at some point after linenbacking, the poster was roughly handled and there are now minor creases in the left and right borders (solely in the excess linen, and not in the poster itself).
