An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Insert Movie Poster (measures 14" x 36" [36 x 91 cm]) (Learn More)

Von Stroheim's The Merry Widow, the 1925 Erich von Stroheim silent romantic love triangle European royalty epic ("Let joy be unconfined"; "From the famous Henry W. Savage stage success by Franz Lehar, Victor Leon and Walter Stein"; about a pretty showgirl who travels to a mythical European country, and both the Crown Prince and another nobleman fall in love with her, but the king won't let either of them marry her, so she marries the richest man in the country; he dies on their wedding night in the throes of passion, and she goes back to Paris, after inheriting a fortune, and she throws lavish parties and is known as "The Merry Widow"; many more events happen before she is ultimately united with her true love) starring Mae Murray (in the title role "as the Widow"), John Gilbert ("as the Prince"), Roy D'Arcy, George Fawcett, Tully Marshall, Sally O'Hara, Josephine Crowell, and Clark Gable (as one of the ballroom dancers; in one of his 14 uncredited roles prior to making his real debut in 1931's "The Painted Desert"). Note that this movie was remade in 1952 starring Lana Turner and Fernando Lamas.

Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this insert! Not only that, but the only other poster from this movie we have auctioned was a linenbacked three-sheet (we re-auctioned it several times, but it was only the one poster), and we have only auctioned three lobby cards. Also note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (except somewhat heavier). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards, and lobby cards. Note that because this poster was paperbacked onto a thicker paper backing, it CAN'T be sent rolled (someone could conceivably roll it or try to do so, but we think it would have a strong chance of lessening its condition, so we will only send it in a very large flat package, unless the buyer insists, and then they would be responsible for any damage).

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster was never folded and it had darkened. It had pinholes in the top blank border and a few in the rest of the blank borders. It had a few tears in the borders caused by rough removal of the pins and a few other tears. It had small paper loss in the lower left blank border and smaller paper loss in the upper right blank border, with very small paper loss in three blank corners. There were also some smudges scattered throughout the poster. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to paperbacking. The poster was well backed, and restoration was performed to the above defects. The restorer painted over much of the solid background areas and borders, to "even them out", but this incredibly rare poster will display well on the new owner's wall!
