Date Sold 2/4/2010Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Window Card Movie Poster (WC; measures 13 1/4" x 18") (Learn More) Marihuana, the 1935 Dwain Esper marijuana marihuana pot weed drug crime thriller ("Daring Drug Expose!"; "Horror Shame Despair!"; "Today's headlines.... Tomorrow's despair....!"; "What happens at marihuana parties?"; "Lust crime sorrow despair shame hate"; "Not recommended for children"; "Smoke that gets in youth's eyes!"; "Misery"; "Weird orgies, wild parties, unleashed passions!"; "America's Crime Creator!"; "A puff of smoke changed their lives!"; "The weed with roots in Hell!", "The sweet pill...that makes life bitter!"; "The most daring picture ever made!") starring Harley Wood, Gloria Browne, Pat Carlyle, Juanita Crosland, Dorothy Dehn, Paul Ellis, Richard Erskine, Hugh McArthur and Hal Taggart. At the time this movie was meant to be a "daring drug expose", but it is now laughable and a camp classic, and posters from the first release of the movie in 1935 (and the roadshow releases that followed it in the late 1930s and early 1940s) are both rare and extremely desired by collectors. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this window card has been trimmed and it now measures 13 1/4" x 18". Also note that because the card was quite fragile prior to backing, we do not want to roll this poster, so we will send it in a large flat package. Please do not ask us to roll it into a tube, because we are afraid that could possibly damage the poster. Condition: fair to good. This window card was found trimmed on all four sides (leaving a tiny bit of white border on each side), and it was quite fragile with many creases, small tears, and some tiny areas of paper loss, much more so around the edges of the poster, but also some scattered throughout the image. It was roughly folded across the middle and there was tiny paper loss in the right end of that fold, in the bottom of the "A". There was a pinhole in each corner. A restorer took the card and mounted it onto a piece of linen. They recognized that restoring all the defects would require re-painting scattered areas throughout the card, and if they wanted that restoration to not stand out, they would have to re-paint most of the card. So instead, they made the decision to simply do minimal restoration to the above defects, and I agree with this decision! When you study the card from close-up, you can clearly see the many defects that it had, but from any reasonable viewing distance, the card displays pretty well (although you can still clearly see signs of some of the defects), and you recognize that you are looking at an original vintage poster, and not any sort of reproduction. But the card did have significant defects and much scattered restoration, so please do not bid on this great and rare card unless you can accept the defects (and the restoration of those defects).
