A Paperbacked German Advertising Poster (measures 28 1/2" x 38 1/4" [72 x 97 cm]) (Learn More) Quo Vadis Bar, the 1919 German post-World War I (WWI) advertising poster encouraging people to visit the Quo Vadis bar on Augsburger Strasse in Berlin, Germany. This poster features Ernst Schlesinger art of a couple in fancy dress questioning an ancient Roman (holding a bottle of champagne) about the location of the bar. Of course, Quo Vadis roughly translates to "Where are you going?". The phrase is linked to Christianity and Polish writer Henryk Sienkiewicz wrote the novel Quo Vadis, which has been adapted into several films, including the 1951 version that was nominated for eight Academy Awards. The Augsburger Strasse was a street where many artists, writers, architects and various shakers of the Berlin Boheme used to live. It was also home to many of Berlin's famous varieties, decadent clubs, cabarets and other venues of the Golden Twenties (a period of economic growth, expansion of liberal values, and an increase in experimental/creative efforts in the field of art from 1923 to 1929 in Germany). It may seem odd to promote a bar in this fashion in the grim and chaotic times of post-war Germany with its record-breaking levels of inflation and severe food shortages, but a German expert tells us that some dealt with this upheaval by "experiencing life to its fullest" and this poster certainly reflects that! Artist: Ernst Schlesinger Important Added Info: Note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a light paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (it means that the poster must be handled carefully, as the backing does not give it much added strength, but it is similar to having an unrestored poster, and yet it has been properly preserved). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster had an irregular area of paper loss in the top center white background area, and paper loss in the left of the bottom border, affecting the bottom of the "b". It had some creases, scuffs, and small tears on parts of the folds, and some darkening and paper loss in the right of the top border and in the top of the right border. It had some smudges scattered in the white background areas. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to paperbacking. Someone mounted the poster onto a thin paper backing with only slight restoration (see our image). Learn More about condition grades
