An Original 1948 (from the first release of this movie in Italy) Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Italian Movie Poster (measures 39 1/4" x 81 1/2" [100 x 207 cm]) (Learn More) Madame Sans-Gene, the 1941 Roger Richebe French Napoleonic era romantic love triangle comedy (based on the play by Emile Moreau; about an outspoken woman who is a lowly laundress in France prior to the Revolution, but afterwards, her husband's fortunes rise, and so does hers, in spite of her being incredibly outspoken about everything, and fearful of no one, including the Emperor Napoleon) starring Arletty, Aime Clariond, Maurice Escande, Henri Nassiet, Jeanne Reinhardt, Madeleine Sylvain, and Albert Dieudonne (as Napoleon Bonaparte, once again playing Napoleon, as he had in Abel Gance's 1927 film). Note that this was first written in 1893, and it fascinated leading actresses for many years! It became an opera in 1911, and there were many silent film versions, the last of which was in 1925 starring Gloria Swanson. This film, made in France while it was occupied by the Nazis, was the first sound version. It appears this movie was never released in the U.S. If anyone knows more about this movie, please e-mail us and we will post it here. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Anselmo Ballester Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this Italian poster! Also note that Italian posters from the first few years after World War II are among the most rare posters there are, and they were almost all not the standard Italian sizes that became standard in the late 1940s (the 39x55 one-panel, the 55x78 two-panel, etc). These are likely so rare because there were still major paper shortages in Italy right after World War II, and few posters were printed, and most were recycled. This is an extremely rare first release Italian poster from 1948. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster was printed in two unevenly sized sections, designed to overlap. The area where they join is a couple inches above the title. The poster had tears and some areas of paper loss near the middle of the center vertical fold, in the middle of the woman's dress. It had a much lesser amount of tears and tiny paper loss on the rest of the folds. It had some darkening in the blank borders, with some pinholes around the edges. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well! Learn More about condition grades
