An Unfolded German Special Poster (measures 26 1/4" x 37 1/4" [67 x 95 cm]) (Learn More) Deutschland Deutschland Uber Alles (literally translates to "Germany, Germany Above All,"), the 1970s German poster featuring John Heartfield collage art of several German leaders singing Deutschlandlied (the national anthem of Germany). The image on this poster is from a famous 1929 Kurt Tucholsky & John Heartfield book (which was frequently burned by the Nazis). The Nazi book burnings were a campaign conducted by the German Student Union to ceremonially burn books in Nazi Germany and Austria in the 1930s. The books targeted for burning were those viewed as being subversive or as representing ideologies opposed to Nazism. These included books written by Jewish, pacifist, religious, classical liberal, anarchist, socialist, and communist authors, among others. One of the most memorable of these burnings took place on May 10th, 1933 in Berlin when over 25,000 books were destroyed and many high Nazi officials addressed the participants and spectators.
