An Unfolded Special Poster (measures 30" x 45" [76 x 114 cm]) (Learn More)

The Fight of the Century (also known as The Fight) is the title writers and historians have given to the legendary sports boxing match between WBC/WBA heavyweight champion Joe Frazier and Ring magazine/lineal heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali. The event was held on Monday, March 8, 1971, at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Frazier won in 15 rounds via unanimous decision, and became the undisputed heavyweight champion boxer of the world! It was the first time that two undefeated boxers fought each other for the heavyweight title. This is an unusual poster. CORE (The Congress of Racial Equality) had been scheduled to hold a special closed circuit showing of this legendary fight on March 8, 1971 at 7:30pm. Poster auctioneer/dealer Jack Rennert approached them about creating a poster for the event, but there was an "official poster" for the event by Leroy Neiman, and Rennert could not get permission to put the boxers' names or their images! So he commissioned Swiss graphic artist Celestinno Piatti to create the poster offered here. He had special 30" x 45" posters printed by Darien House, and they gave a commission from each poster sold to CORE. They sold the posters in advance of the event and also continued selling them after the event. We don't know how much they were sold for, how many were printed, or for how long they were sold after the event. If anyone knows more about this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here.
