An Unfolded German Advertising Poster (measures 23 3/4" x 35 1/2" [60 x 90 cm]) (Learn More)

Spanihel Der Grosse Lump (literally translates to "Spanihel The Big Lump"), the 1921 German advertising poster (with a tagline that translates to "The satire of our time") promoting the purchase of a book by Hermann Wagner, and featuring art of a man by Jupp Wiertz. Lump roughly means "rascal" in this context and the art shows him carrying a huge 50 Reichsmak note before him. In the 1920s and 1930s, Wiertz (along with Ludwig Hohlwein) was one of the leading German grahic designers, especially of fine travel posters. Unlike Hohlwein, he did not follow "the trend of the (Nazi) times" with nationalist content and naturalist style, and instead remained faithful to a bold painterly style with dramatic light-shade contrasts, stemming from expressionist Art Deco.

Artist: Jupp Wiertz

Condition: good to very good. The poster was never folded. It has a strip of plastic with holes attached to the back of the top border (no doubt this was done as a way of hanging this poster with others on racks, and being able to easily access any of them). The plastic strip could be removed by a professional or talented amateur, or of course, the excess plastic could simply be trimmed off. There are also two tape stains in the left border, where tape on the back bled through to the front. Otherwise, the poster is in nice condition!
