A Linenbacked Special Poster (measures 14 1/4" x 20 1/4" [36 x 51 cm]) (Learn More) Prevent Forest Fires, the 1943 Walt Disney poster ("Please, Mister, don't be careless"; "Greater danger than ever!") encouraging people to help prevent forest fires and featuring art of Bambi, Thumper, and Flower from the Walt Disney cartoon "Bambi". Note that Walt Disney patriotically allowed the United States to use Bambi (from his recently released feature film of that name) for U.S. Forest Service public service campaigns like this one in 1943, but he only gave them a one-year contract, and after the year was up, he changed his mind! So there are some wonderful public service posters like these, which use Disney's Bambi, but they are only from 1942 or 1943, and they are extremely rare. It worked out well for the U.S. Forest Service, however. In 1944, they issued a poster featuring "Smokey Bear", and he wore jeans and a campaign hat (what we now call a ranger hat). His slogan was "Smokey says - Care will prevent 9 out of 10 forest fires!". Over the next decade, Smokey would change in appearance as the artist who drew him changed, and he would get the slogan "Remember! Only you can prevent forest fires", and eventually, he became "Smokey the Bear"! But the 1943 U.S. Forest Service posters with Bambi are far more rare than the 1940s Smokey Bear posters! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster was folded once in each direction and it had tiny paper loss at the crossfold and a tiny bit of paper loss 2" to the left of that in the white background area. It had paper loss in the top right corner and a tear and tiny paper loss near the center of the top border, and a tear and tiny paper loss in the upper left blank border. It had some light water stains scattered throughout. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was expertly backed by a top restorer, who was able to remove the water staining through chemical means, and the poster now displays great! Learn More about condition grades
