An Original Vintage Campaign Book (measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]; 98 pages) (Learn More)

RKO Radio Pictures 1944-45, the 1944 spiral-bound campaign book ("Preview of Pictures"; "The Showmanship Company") sent to theater owners to encourage them to show RKO movies. Some of the movies included are: None But the Lonely Heart, Situation Out of Hand (Ginger Rogers), Experiment Perilous, Woman in the Window, Tall in the Saddle (John Wayne), The Master Race, Wonder Man, The Little Black Book (John Garfield), The Robe, Made in Heaven (Jean Arthur), Farewell My Lovely, Three Caballeros, American Carnival (Frank Sinatra), Enchanted Cottage, Tarzan and the Amazons, The Body Snatcher (Boris Karloff), Meet Dick Tracy, Deadlier Than the Male, and many more! We have only pictured a small portion of the book, but many of the ones that are not pictured are just as nice as the ones that ARE pictured! Because RKO did not have the biggest movies, they went all out in creating really nice ads, and of course, some of their stars were big names, just not in their absolute prime, and there really are tons of wonderful ads! Note that even though this campaign book was sent to many theater owners, it appears that very few examples have survived. I have been a collector of campaign books and related material for many years, and I know for certain that this campaign book is extremely rare! Note that studios almost always spent far more money preparing campaign books than they did preparing movie posters (often hiring very talented and well-known illustration artists), because campaign books directly benefited the studio in getting theaters to book the movies, whereas posters more benefited the theaters, rather than the studios (although of course, what was good for the theaters was ultimately good for the studios as well). Note that RKO was falling on hard times at this time, and this appears to be the very last campaign book that they made (please someone correct us if we are wrong, and there is one after 1944-1945!).

Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this campaign book! As noted above, we think this is the final campaign book RKO made, and before this one surfaced, we were thinking that the 1943-1944 one was the last one. This is surely an extremely rare campaign book!

Note: We have 16 images of the campaign books in this set, but due to a space limitation, only TEN of the 16 images are displayed above. However, there is a "supersize" link to the right of those images that lets you see the other 6.

Condition: good to very good. The back cover is missing, but otherwise, the book is in pretty nice condition. There is a real oddity to this book. Someone in the binding company made an error and accidentally bound in an extra page. It does not hurt the book in any way, and of course, it could be removed, because it is bound in twice back to back, but it is an interesting curiosity.
