An Unfolded Special Poster (measures 25" x 33" [64 x 84 cm]) (Learn More) Maxine Elliott (born Jessie McDermott) was a stage and screen actress who lived from 1868 to 1940. She was more famous for her off-screen exploits than for her actual acting! It is hard to separate the truth from the rumor, but we found references to her having an affair with J.P. Morgan around 1908 (when he was 70, and after she divorced her second husband), and that he might have financed her in at least one stage play (she first appeared on the stage in 1890 at the age of 22). In 1908, she opened her own Broadway theater, called "The Maxine Elliott", which was the only theater in the U.S. owned and operated by a woman. She had a "thing" for famous athletes! She had an affair with a Baseball Hall of Famer named John Montgomery Ward (and was named in his divorce) and she also had an affair with boxing champ James J. Corbett. In 1913, she dated tennis star Anthony Wilding, when she was 45, and he was in his 20s! She moved to Belgium during World War I, where Wilding was serving in the military, and she raised money for Belgian relief, and she intended to marry Wilding, but he was killed in action in 1915. One of her husbands was Nat Goodwin, a leading comic stage actor, whom she met on a cruise to Australia. She had dark hair and an unusual violet eyes, and has been compared to the similar Elizabeth Taylor (both in appearance and in number of men in her life). She only made three feature movie appearances in the 1910s, and her last stage appearance was in 1920 at the age of 52. Some reviewers claim that she was a great actress, and others said it was only her great beauty that made her successful. If anyone knows more about this her, please e-mail us and we will post it here. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have seen this poster on the Internet where it was stated that it dated from 1905, but we can't verify that. However, that date seems about right, given that she opened her own theater in 1908. If anyone knows more about this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Condition: fair. The poster was never folded. There are tears and areas of paper loss around the edges, and someone put paper tape on the back of many of those areas. There are tears and areas of paper loss in the bottom right corner that do not have tape on the back. There is a long tear in the left that separates part of the bottom left of the poster from the rest of the poster, and it was re-attached with tape from the back. This poster has really significant defects, but it is very fortunate that the majority of them are in the blank green areas, and very few are in the image, and after proper restoration by a talented restorer, the poster will look incredible. But please do not bid on this poster unless you can accept its defects described above or are willing to pay to have them properly restored.
