Important Added Info: Note that this is a very unusual poster! We are told by an expert that it is a Movic commercial poster that was printed in Japan on "tea paper" (like brown paper used for bags in the U.S.), and that it was available for purchase only to people who saw the film on opening night. It measures the same size as regular Japanese B2 posters, 20 1/4" x 28 1/2" [51 x 72 cm]. We are told that very few survive, all have light rippling due to the paper used, and that it has not previously been auctioned in the U.S. It has a tiny silver metallic sticker from Kodansha Comics (the studio which published the Akira manga and helped bring the story to the big screen) attached to the bottom right corner, and it is better when this has survived, because it guarantees authenticity (although this would be an incredibly difficult poster to make a duplicate of, given the very unusual paper!). There is a similar situation with the 1983 Return of the Jedi commercial poster by Noriyoshi Ohrai (called the "starfall" poster), which was only sold at theaters during the first release of the movie, and that poster is extremely rare, and we have auctioned it for $2,000. We checked with another major Japanese expert, and he agreed with the above information. If anyone knows more about this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here.

Condition: good to very good. The poster was never folded. It was attached to a wall with tape in each corner, and when the tape was removed, it caused small surface paper loss in each blank corner (see our image). There are also a few tiny dot stains in the background areas. The poster is lightly rippled down the left edge and very slightly in the rest of the poster, but this is due to the type of paper used to create the poster (not water damage). The poster could absolutely be displayed and enjoyed as it is, or one could choose to have the above defects corrected through linenbacking. Either way, the new owner will have a great poster to display on their wall!
