Artist: Robert McGinnis
Important Added Info: Note that this is a poster that has a mystery surrounding it. What is it? Around 7 years ago, a seller appeared on eBay with a group of different Italian Sean Connery James Bond posters, one for each movie. Each had art that had never been seen before (including this poster). At that time, some longtime collectors and dealers said that they thought the posters were some kind of tribute poster or fake poster, and others said they thought they were from the early 1970s (even though each had the date that the movie was first released in the printing). The people who said they were fake thought that the seller would have more examples of each, but after the first ones sold on eBay, no more appeared at all. So the question is, what are these posters? The artwork is by Robert McGinnis and was previously believed to only be officially used on United Artist's Thunderball production letterhead (though there are modern prints which use the art). The printer on the poster is not known to have printed any first release posters for Thunderball. A resourceful collector checked with SAC (an Italian organization similar to the National Screen Service or Sonis) and this poster does not seem to be a theatrical poster from a 1971 or later wide re-release. It could have been for re-releases that were shown only in a single theater, which would explain why there is only one of each poster. It is also possible that the poster is based on an outdoor ad (which SAC did not handle) such as was displayed on vehicles or billboards. We don't think the posters could be from later than the 1970s, because they were printed on paper that is consistent with 1970s Italian paper (and the posters were sold unbacked, even though this one has since been linenbacked). We don't see how these could be commercial posters (made to be sold to the public), because no one produces only one each of commercial posters, and if there were many of these posters, there would surely be many more of them in collectors' hands (although we suppose it is possible these were prototypes of commercial posters that never got distributed). IN ANY EVENT, DO NOT BID ON THIS POSTER UNLESS YOU CAN ACCEPT THE MANY UNCERTAINTIES SURROUNDING IT, BECAUSE WE MAKE NO GUARANTEES ON IT.

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had minor wear on the folds. It had tiny paper loss in the center of the top border. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well!
