A Linenbacked French Travel Poster (measures 29 3/4" x 41" [76 x 104 cm]) (Learn More)

San Salvadour, the circa 1902 French travel poster encouraging people to visit the San Salvadour hotel & mineral baths spa which was located in Hyeres area of the French Riviera. We can't find much information about this hotel, but it appears that San Salvadour was built in 1872 by Auguste Parent and was originally intended to accommodate a prince of the Napoleon family. Eventually it passed to a nun called Sister Candide who created a "hydrotherapy" hospital for children with tuberculosis. To finance this, the existing building was turned into a luxury hotel/spa. San Salvadour Lithium Water was indicated for gout, rheumatism and other ailments (it was also sold as bottled water). In 1910, Sister Candide was arrested after the mysterious suicide of her partner, and San Salvadour was eventually turned over to Assistance Publique de Paris (a French public health agency). If anyone knows more about San Salvadour and its history, please e-mail us and we will post it here.
