An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded English Three-Sheet (called a six-sheet in England) Movie Poster (3sh; measures 40" x 88" [102 x 224 cm]) (Learn More) The Return of Frank James, the 1940 Fritz Lang outlaw cowboy western sequel ("Again the name of James strikes terror over all the west! More spectacular and exciting than the unforgettable 'Jesse James'!") starring Henry Fonda (in the title role as Frank James), Gene Tierney (in her first movie role!), Jackie Cooper, Henry Hull, John Carradine, J. Edward Bromberg, Donald Meek, Eddie Collins, George Barbier, Matthew 'Stymie' Beard, and Ernest Whitman. Note that "Jesse James" had been one of 20th Century-Fox's biggest hits of 1939, but of course, Tyrone Power Jr. died at the end of the movie, so the only way they could make a sequel was having it star Henry Fonda, reprising his role as Jesse's brother Frank! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this English three-sheet! Note that this poster was almost certainly printed in the very late 1930s or in the early 1940s, at a time when England was undergoing a severe paper shortage (as was most of Europe) due to World War II. So they would take older unused posters, and print new posters on the backs of them! In this particular case, the bottom section of the "Return of Frank James" poster was printed on the back of a piece of an unknown English play three-sheet! We have provided an image of the back of that section, although of course, the winner of this auction will receive the single "Return of Frank James" poster (in two sections). Also note that this English three-sheet measures 40" x 88" [102 x 224 cm]. Note that this is one of seven English six-sheets and five English three-sheets that we are currently auctioning in 12 separate auctions. The posters were part of an amazing find of such posters that were auctioned in England several years ago. Our consignor purchased these twelve from that auction, and has consigned them to us. It will likely be many years before we again auction ANY of these twelve incredibly scarce posters! Condition: good. Be sure to first read what is written above about this poster! The poster is fragile and has tears and tiny areas of paper loss on parts of the folds and borders. Rather than attempt to describe individual defects, we would much rather you look at our super-sized image of the poster (especially since, on those from this collection that have printing on the back, you can also see the backs of some or all of the poster). Looking at those super-sized images should let you judge the exact condition of the poster. But clearly, all of the twelve posters from this remarkable collection are in urgent need of professional restoration, but after that is done by a talented restorer, they will look wonderful, and likely will not require much paint restoration!
