An Original Vintage Folded Belgian World War II Poster (measures 23 1/4" x 33" [59 x 84 cm]) (Learn More) Invasion - Cimetiere des Allies (literally translated to "Invasion - Cemetery of the Allies"), the 1942 Belgian World War II (WWII) poster featuring art of a cross with a helmet on top with dead soldiers and destroyed equipment in the background. Note that this poster was produced by the Nazi controlled Belgian government in response to the Dieppe Raid, which was a 1942 failed Allied attack on the German-occupied port of Dieppe, France. This poster was produced in at least two versions. One has Dutch writing on it, and the other has French writing on it, but otherwise they are identical. It could even have been produced in other languages as well! We are listing the two posters under two different descriptions, but if you want to see the other poster, go to "De Invasie Het Kerkhof der Geallieerden". Operation Jubilee or the Dieppe Raid was a 1942 Allied amphibious attack on the German-occupied port of Dieppe in northern France. Over 6050 infantry, predominantly Canadian, supported by a regiment of tanks, were put ashore from a naval force operating under protection of Royal Air Force fighters. The port was to be captured and held for a short period, to test the feasibility of a landing and to gather intelligence. German coastal defenses, port structures and important buildings were also to be demolished. The raid had the added objectives of boosting morale and demonstrating the commitment of the United Kingdom to re-open the Western front. Unfortunately, aerial and naval support was insufficient to enable the ground forces to achieve their objectives; the tanks were trapped on the beach and the infantry was largely prevented from entering the town by obstacles and German fire. After less than six hours mounting casualties forced a retreat; only one landing force achieved its objective. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this poster was folded at one time but has been laying flat for a long time and will be sent rolled in a tube. Condition: good. The poster was never folded. It has tears around the edges with small paper loss in portions of the borders and larger paper loss in the bottom left corner and smaller paper loss in the top left corner. There is a 8" tear in the lower right, extending into the image with tiny surface paper loss on the tear, which has tape on the back. There are tape repairs on the back. The poster can be restored, but bear in mind its defects before bidding on it. Learn More about condition grades
