A Vintage Hardcover Book (measures 5 1/4" x 7 1/2" [13 x 19 cm]; 309 pages) (Learn More) Moontide, the 1942 Fritz Lang & Archie Mayo romantic film noir melodrama ("Different! Jean Gabin is not only an altogether new type, girls! He's got a different technique of love making. Don't ask! See it - in Moontide..."; "Thrill to discovering a new star!"; based on the novel by Willard Robertson; a strange movie about a waterfront worker who is afraid he may have killed a man when he was drunk, and he hides out on a barge with his best friend, but he meets a prostitute who tries to kill herself, and he lets her live there as well, and the friend is jealous and afraid that she will leave him the odd man out, and he tries to get rid of her) starring Jean Gabin ("His first American picture!"), Ida Lupino, Thomas Mitchell, Claude Rains, Jerome Cowan, and Helene Reynolds. Note that legendary director Fritz Lang had left Germany to escape Hitler in the early 1930s, and when he began making American movies, what he made was incredibly dark. The credited director on this movie is Archie Mayo, but it is known that Lang directed portions of it, which makes sense, because this movie is extremely downbeat! Important Added Info: Note that this is the Triangle Books photoplay edition in its original dust jacket (one of a collection of such books we are auctioning in this set of auctions). Here are some more details about these books: Triangle Books (like Grosset & Dunlap) was a publisher that made a deal with some studios to publish "movie edition" hardcovers of novels that were currently adapted into movies. They would republish the original novel as the movie came out (or soon after), and they would put a dust jacket on the book that showed the stars of the movie, and they would include several pages of images from the movie scattered in the book. Oddly, in the case of this movie edition, they did not include any images from the movie within the book, but the stars' images are on the cover of the dust jacket. Perhaps it was published before the movie even was ready, so they did not have access to images from the film. These books were incredibly popular in the 1920s and 1930s. Note that we have pictured the front cover, the title page, and the interior page that shows the publishing information, and one or more interior 2-page spreads. Because we know that the dust jacket is an important part of the value of this book, we also pictured the entire dust jacket opened up. Between that image and our other images, you should be able to get a good sense of the overall condition of this book. Condition: good to very good. The dust jacket is in a protective sleeve.
