Date Sold 6/29/2017Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Unfolded World War I Poster (measures 15 1/4" x 23" [39 x 58 cm]) (Learn More) U.S. Marines: Soldiers of the Sea, the circa 1917 U.S. World War I (WWI) recruitment poster. There were multiple recruitment posters of this design and each featured different full color artwork. Note that the U.S. Marine Corps was founded in 1775 as the "fighting branch" of the U.S. Navy. Most people think of the Marines are a completely separate branch of the military, but actually, they are still closely tied to the Navy (although many Marines don't like to think about that)! Artist: Sidney H. Riesenberg Important Added Info: Note that this poster has been significantly trimmed and it now measures 15 1/4" x 23" [39 x 58 cm]. It originally measured approximately 20" x 30", and it had "U.S. Marines above the "Soldiers of the Sea" at the top, and "Interesting Duty - Both Land and Sea" below the bottom of the image. Obviously, someone trimmed off those areas and parts of the left and right borders, so bear in mind this trimming before bidding on this poster. Note that while this poster could conceivably be rolled, we will only ship it in a large flat package, because we feel certain that rolling it would damage it. Note that this item needs to be shipped in an oversized flat package. Some of these items can ONLY be sent in flat packages, and could not possibly be rolled into a tube. On some of them (for example f it is a size that might ordinarily be rolled in a tube, like a half-sheet), the reason it is in this auction is specifically because we feel it either CAN'T be rolled or because we feel it would be a mistake to roll it, because it might well damage the item. In the case of the few items that could be rolled, we will roll the item in a tube if the new owner insists, but only if they accept that they can't return the item if it is damaged from being rolled. So please bear in mind that this item must be sent in a LARGE flat package (the size of the package will depend on the size of the item), and bear this added expense in mind before placing a bid on it. Condition: poor. Someone trimmed the poster to around the image (see above). They likely left the "Soldiers of the Sea", because they needed that portion to include the entire flag. In addition, someone once rolled the poster, causing many rough creases throughout, and there is also paper tape on the back of all four borders. Learn More about condition grades
