A 1948 Re-Release Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Style A Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More)

A Night at the Opera, the classic 1935 Sam Wood screwball musical opera romantic comedy starring the Marx Brothers (Groucho Marx as Otis B. Driftwood, Chico Marx as Fiorello, and Harpo Marx as Tomasso), Kitty Carlisle (as Rosa Castaldi), Allan Jones (as Ricardo Baroni), Walter Woolf King (billed as "Walter King"; as Rodolfo Lassparri), Sig Ruman (as Herbert Gottlieb), and Margaret Dumont (as Mrs. Claypool). Note that MGM added a romantic plot to the Marx Bros. typical screwball comedy, and it really adds to the movie, as Carlisle and Jones have real chemistry together, and their songs are excellent. Of course, this is also the movie that has the Marx Bros.' most famous comedy scene, the "stateroom" scene, plus the great scene of Groucho and Chico attempting to sign a contract!

Artist: Al Hirschfeld
Important Added Info: Note that by 1948, when this movie was re-released, MGM had figured out that the "stateroom" scene was an all-time comedy classic, so they included it on this poster, when it had not been included on the 1935 posters! Also note that the poster says "AN MGM MASTERPIECE REPRINT" in the bottom center. This was a terminology used by MGM at this time for some re-releases, and it has caused some collectors to be confused! This poster is an original poster from the 1948 re-release of this movie, and is NOT a "reprint"!

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had small paper loss at the crossfold, and small tears and fine surface paper loss on both folds. It had paper loss in the right border extending into the yellow background to the right of the bottom of the title. It had tears and paper loss around the edges, slightly extending into the background in a few areas. There were some smudges and scuffs scattered in the image. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects. Also, the restorer painted over all of the borders, and they painted over the copyright information and the NSS information in the bottom left and bottom right. Of course, no one looks at that, but the new owner of this poster could either display it as it is, or have the poster re-backed, and during that process, the paint that is over the small writing at the bottom can be removed.
