Universal News Reel Volume 3 No. 58, the 1931 news short ("The World At Your Door"; "Issued twice a week"; "Graham McNamee Universal's Talking Reporter Broadcasting The Latest News Events") featuring headlines such as "Huge Navy blimp moored to the mast of moving ship - Montauk, N.Y. - Los Angeles is anchored.", "100,000 frolic at world Shriners' meet - Cleveland, O. - Featured by Monster Parade.", "Ocean fliers fall short of goal in Hungary - Mineola, N.Y. - Start transatlantic hop.", "Smoking Deer - Auburn, Wash. - 'Pest' earns his name.", "Near-riot at church fiesta - New York, N.Y. - Crowds rush police lines.", "Mrs. Moody starts fight to regain tennis laurels - Brookline, Mass. - Helen Wills wins match.", "Water-walkers - Vienna, Austria - Police add equipment.", "with other sensational thrills", "Released by Universal". Universal News Reel was one of the series of newsreels released by Universal Studios from at least the early 1920s through 1967. The earliest newsreels we know of were called "International News", and Universal made one-sheets for those that had a series of headlines on them, but no image except for a cool border design. In the 1930s and 1940s, they were called "Universal News Reel" and those also had headlines, and sometimes small images. Nearly all of them were filmed in black and white, and many were narrated by Ed Herlihy. In the 1950s and 1960s, they were called "Universal-International News". In 1976, the films' owner, MCA, made the unusual decision to turn over ownership of all of the newsreels to the National Archives. The decision effectively ended Universal's copyright claim, releasing the films into the public domain. Because royalties no longer have to be paid in order to broadcast them, Universal Newsreels have become a popular source of file footage in recent years.
