Amazing Stories is the American science fiction magazine first published in April 1926 by Hugo Gernsback's Experimenter Publishing. It was the first magazine devoted solely to science fiction. There had been some science fiction stories in other magazines, including some published by Gernsback, but this one helped define and launch a new genre of pulp fiction (and it was called "scientifiction" at first!). Amazing Stories was published, with some interruptions, for almost eighty years! It was initially approximately 8 1/2" x 11", and printed on very inexpensive pulp paper (like what was used in newspapers at that time), but the covers were printed on a better quality paper stock (after many years, they switched to a smaller "digest" size, as did all the others). They hired some of the best fantasy artists to do their covers, which normally illustrated the longest story in that particular issue! For more on this magazine, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazing_Stories. Startling Stories was another one of the pulp magazines that started in the 1940s, and was similar to Amazing Stories. Note that the items in this lot are from the 1940s and the 1950s Measurements: from 6 1/2" x 9" to 7" x 10"Condition: good to very good. Learn More about condition grades Titles included:
