Date Sold 9/20/2018 Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. 4 Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Cards (LCs; measure 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Bulldog Drummond at Bay, the 1937 Norman Lee English detective crime mystery thriller ("Adapted from the Novel by 'Sapper'") starring John Lodge (in the title role as Bulldog Drummond), Dorothy MacKaill, Victor Jory, Claude Allister, and Hugh Miller. Note that "Bulldog Drummond" was a fictional English detective who was created in 1920 in a magazine story by H.C. McNeile, who wrote under the pen name of "Sapper" He appeared in ten novels, short stories, and even stage plays. When McNeile passed away in 1937, his friend, Gerard Fairlie, wrote more stories between 1938 and 1954, and after that, other authors created even more stories. Drummond was a World War I veteran who is bored and becomes an amateur detective, and he marries his first client, who becomes his assistant. The first movie based on this character was in 1923, with Carlyle Blackwell in the lead role. There was one more silent with Jack Buchanan in the lead, and then Ronald Colman starred in the first sound version in 1929. There were 13 movies in the 1930s, many with John Howard in the lead role. The character was revived in 1947, and 5 movies were made between 1947 and 1951, with Ron Randell, Tom Conway, and Walter Pidgeon playing the leads. Also note that male lead John Lodge has an interesting background! He came from an important New England family (his grandfather was William Henry Cabot Lodge), and he shocked them by becoming a movie actor! He appeared in a couple dozen movies between 1932 and 1940. He quit the movies to serve in World War II, and afterwards, in 1946, he became the second major movie actor ever to hold national political office, serving as a Congressman (the first was Helen Gahagan Douglas). In 1950, he became Governor of Connecticut, and later, he served as ambassador to several countries! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that these are very rare scene cards for this movie (we have only auctioned a title card and one different scene card for this title in all of our years of auctioning!) Condition: good to very good. Each of the cards has a circular snipe in one of the lower corners (see our image). The card pictured at upper left has a tear at lower right and the card pictured below it has some dot staining around the edges and some surface paper loss in the title area at lower left. The card pictured at upper right has only a few minor border defects and the card pictured below it has a small gold snipe glued under the title area at lower left (over the "A Crime Club Novel"). The cards otherwise are in pretty nice condition and they have no tape whatsoever on the front or back, and they never have had any restoration of any kind! Learn More about condition grades
