An Original Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Movie Lobby Card (Learn More) The White Pearl, the 1915 Hugh Ford & Edwin S. Porter silent romantic sailing ship adventure melodrama (a rich man's son loves a sea captain's daughter, and her father sends her on a ship to get away from him, but he stows away, and when the ship sinks, he rescues her, but then she gets amnesia and is sold into slavery, and he must rescue her yet again) starring Marie Doro, Thomas Holding, Walter Craven, Robert Broderick, and Cesare Gravina. Note that Marie Doro was born in 1882, and she starred in many very early movies, starting in 1902. She was a direct descendant of Patrick Henry! She continued working in movies through the 1910s, but in the early 1920s, she tired of Hollywood, and she moved to England and Italy. She became a recluse in later life, avoiding all her past acquaintances. She was only briefly married in 1915 and never had any children. She passed away in New York City in 1956 at the age of 74. An interesting piece of trivia is that Charlie Chaplin said that she was his first true love! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that with super early cards like this, one must always consider that they might be unmarked re-releases. But in the case of this card, it is dated 1915, and we feel it is surely from that year! Note that, in the early days of movie making, when lobby cards were first made (around 1915), studios would issue sets of the cards in two sizes; the regular 11" x 14" size, and a smaller 8" x 10" size. The cards were identical in every way except for the different size. This practice continued through the early 1920s, at which point the studios abandoned the smaller lobby cards, likely because theaters either ordered 11" x 14" lobby cards or 8" x 10" stills, and did not order enough of the 8" x 10" lobby cards to justify them continuing to make them. Condition: very good to fine. There is a faint stain in the top left corner, but otherwise, the card is in excellent condition, especially considering it is a century old!
