His father was major silent stage and screen star, Jason Robards Sr. He had limited success in New York City in theater, TV, and radio before becoming a star with his lead role on the stage in "The Iceman Cometh", which he immediately followed with the lead role in "Long Day's Journey Into Night" (both plays by Eugene O'Neill). He was married to Lauren Bacall for many years. Some of his movies include: Melvin & Howard (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film), Once Upon a Time in the West, A Thousand Clowns, Toys in the Attic, All The President's Men (winner of the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film), and Julia (winner of the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film). He passed away in 2000 at the age of 78. Important Added Info: Note that this is a special lot of "portrait" stills that were consigned to us by an individual who collected portraits of stars he liked over many decades! Each of the lots contain a number of ORIGINAL stills of a well known celebrity (there are 40 lots in all, and each is in its own auction), and the star is prominently pictured in ALL of the stills in that lot! Each of the lots contain a wide variety of stills of that particular star, covering different movies they made, and from different points in their career. Please note: many of these stills are in SUCH excellent condition that a person viewing them might well wonder if they are reproductions, but we assure you they are not! They were purchased decades ago (in many cases, when the movies came out), and they were in "brand new" condition at that time, and have been carefully stored ever since, so that explains why the condition is SO fine (and it also means this is a really rare opportunity to acquire multiple ORIGINAL portraits of a single star (there are NO repros in any of the lots)! Condition: very good to fine. Note that one of the stills measures 7 1/4" x 9 1/4", but it has not been trimmed, and one is a TV still from a TV movie that he appeared in.
