An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Italian Two-Panel (known in Italy as a "4 Fogli") Movie Poster (2p; measures 51" x 74 1/2" [130 x 189 cm]) (Learn More)

Speed Mad, the 1925 Jay Marchant silent romantic car racing sports action melodrama (about a rich young man whose father finances his life of fast cars and fancy living; but after he gets in a crash and is arrested, his father cuts him off and he leaves home with nothing but his car; meanwhile, his girlfriend's father is about to have his property foreclosed; luckily, there is a car race with a $5,000 prize, and after escaping being kidnapped, the hero wins the race and gives it to his girlfriend's father to pay off his mortgage) starring William Fairbanks, Edith Roberts, Lloyds Whitlock, Melbourne MacDowell, and Johnny Fox. Note that William Fairbanks was a German-American born Carl Uhlman, and he started in movies at the age of 22 in 1916, and he acted under his own name. In 1921, he had an inspiration and changed his name to "William Fairbanks" (although he was no relation to Douglas Fairbanks), and he started starring in mostly action movies, like Doug did at the same time, and many of William's movies involved car racing, and he did his own stunts. He had a fair amount of success in westerns and action movies, but most of his movies were made for lesser studios, and his career ended in 1928 with the coming of sound. He passed away in 1945 at the age of 50, after having contracted pneumonia. Note that this movie was produced by "Perfection Pictures". This was created in 1917 by a merger of three legendary film companies of the earlier 1910s, Essanay, Thomas A. Edison, Inc., and George Kleine. We know that Perfection Pictures produced at least a couple dozen movies between 1917 and 1925, and we suspect that they also re-released some movies from the above three studios that were made prior to 1917. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here.

If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that this Italian two-panel measures 50 3/4" x 74 1/2" [129 x 189 cm], and it was printed on two sections designed to overlap. Note that this is not the standard Italian two-panel size (which measures roughly 55" x 78"), but this is not at all surprising, because it is from the 1920s (likely 1925), and sizes were not standardized in Italy at that time (and VERY few Italian posters from before World War II are known to have survived, due to the huge paper shortages there during World War II). Also, note that "Perfection Pictures" was an American studio of the mid 1920s that also did some Chaplin re-releases, but they did some of their own movies, and this is one of those.

Note that it is difficult to accurately date Italian posters, and some unmarked re-release posters can be extremely difficult to distinguish from first releases, so please bear that in mind before you place a bid. We used our best information to date this poster, but we can't always guarantee that the Italian posters we sell are not from an unmarked re-release, but this will only prove to be true in a very tiny number of cases.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had extra creases, tears, and small paper loss on parts of several foldlines, but survived pretty well considering its age (see our image). Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects.
