W. Somerset Maugham's Of Human Bondage, the 1946 Edmund Goulding tortured-romantic melodrama (based on the novel by W. Somerset Maugham; about a medical student who falls madly in love with a trashy woman who torments him and mostly ruins his life) starring Paul Henreid (as Philip Carey), Eleanor Parker (as Mildred Rogers), Alexis Smith, Edmund Gwenn, and Janis Paige. Note that the first move based on this novel was filmed in 1934 with Bette Davis and Leslie Howard in the lead roles, and that there was a 1964 version with Kim Novak and Laurence Harvey.
