An Original Vintage Linenbacked Autographed English Magic Show Poster (measures 30 1/4" x 39 3/4" [77 x 101 cm]) (Learn More) Murray, the 1920s English magic poster ("The most amazing, sensational and mysterious man of this or any age"; "Book now"; "Must be seen to be believed") promoting a show by Murray. Murray (real name Norman Murray Walters) was an Australian escape artist who popularized the term "escapology" (it appears it was coined by Houdini, who started earlier than Murray, but their careers overlapped), and Murray was sometimes called "Murray the Escapologist". He was well-known for doing amazing escapes similar to Houdini's, such as escaping from a straitjacket while hanging upside-down under an airplane in flight, and being bound in a straitjacket and thrown into a lion cage. Unlike Houdini, Murray lived a long life, passing away in 1988 at the age of 87. He apparently was extremely "eccentric" and "colorful", and there are numerous stories about him on the Internet, some not flattering. Note that this poster features art of Murray holding handcuffs. If anyone knows more about this poster or Murray, please e-mail us and we will post it here. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this poster has been personally autographed (signed) by Murray! We have no letter of authenticity, but since he lived to 1988 and was frequently at magic conventions, we have no reason to think that the autograph is not authentic. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had tiny tears and tiny bits of paper loss on small parts of some folds. It had some paper loss and tears across the top, but only one of them slightly extends into the orange background, in the top right corner. Those top border defects were repaired with tape. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did little restoration to the defects described above, and the top blank border defects will, of course, barely show when the poster is framed.
