An Original Vintage Theatrical Deluxe 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Movie Still (Learn More)

It's the Old Army Game, the 1926 A. Edward Sutherland silent romantic screwball comedy ("It's the Old Army Game: Meaning 'Never Give A Sucker An Even Break'"; "From the play by Joseph P. McEvoy"; about a drugstore owner who leases space to a man selling real estate, and when it appears the man swindled people, the drugstore owner leaves town and has all sorts of adventures) starring W.C. Fields, Louise Brooks, Blanche Ring, William Gaxton, Mary Foy, and Josephine Dunn (as a "society bather"). Note that this is a typical W.C. Fields movie in that the plot is very loose and much of the movie consists of Fields performing his trademark gags. As usual in Fields' movies, he has a young female who he has a good relationship with, and in this case it is the young lady who works in his drugstore. But what is wonderful is that young lady is played by Louise Brooks, who would go on to great cult stardom, in some ways rivaling that of Fields himself! However, much of Brooks' scenes concern her and her boyfriend in the movie, played by William Gaxton, and she has almost no scenes with W.C. Fields, and she is not pictured on the posters or the title card.

Important Added Info: Note that this great still (and two others we are currently auctioning) has a most unusual provenance. Our consignor's father worked at Paramount Studios between 1925 and 1927, and he was given a number of deluxe stills (and a few regular ones) from then-current films, and he kept them all the years since, and now they have been consigned to us! We have taken the very best three stills that he had (portraits of Louise Brooks, W.C. Fields, and Clara Bow), and put them in this September Major Auction, and we will have many of the other individual stills in our next auction of single stills, which begins on September 10th. This is a wonderful opportunity to acquire these extremely rare stills (and other than some of them measuring under 8x10, which likely occurred prior to them being distributed, they are in quite nice condition, especially considering their age). First release movie paper from this Louise Brooks/W.C. Fields movie (especially anything showing Louise Brooks) is extremely rare (we have only previously auctioned a window card, two single stills, one with Brooks, which auctioned for $602, and another with Fields, plus a single lobby card in "fair" condition that did not picture either Fields or Brooks. Note that this is a deluxe still printed on double weight paper stock.

Condition: very good. The still has darkening down the right edge, but it only affects the blank white border and a tiny bit of the background area. There are smudges in the top left background area and the corners are very slightly "rounded". Otherwise, the still is in nice condition, especially considering its age.
