Spite Marriage, the 1929 Edward Sedgwick silent romantic love triangle revenge comedy (about a lowly "pants-presser", a tailor's assistant, who falls in love with a beautiful star of a Broadway show, and attends every performance; when she is jilted by her leading man, she gets drunk and marries the pants-presser, but when he realizes that she only married him out of spite, he leaves and goes to work as a sailor, but he ends up on the same yacht that she is on, and he rescues her, which causes her to realize she really does love him!) starring Buster Keaton, Dorothy Sebastian, Edward Earle, Leila Hyams, and William Bechtel

Artist: Malcolm Eaton
Important Added Info: Note that this is an incredibly rare window card, which we have never auctioned before! If it looks familiar to you, it is likely because we once auctioned a reproduction of this exact window card (a collector begged the owner of this window card to have an exact reproduction made, because at that time, the owner intended to never sell it)! But now, our consignor has decided the time has finally come to let go of this wonderful window card, and it might be many years, if ever, before another example is for sale or auction. We have never before auctioned any first release poster from this movie, only a single lobby card and a herald. Also, note that Malcolm Eaton created the art for this poster, and it is very difficult to find information about him! A very knowledgeable collector pointed out that he created the art for several Buster Keaton films such as Doughboys, Parlor, Bedroom and Bath, Baby Cyclone, Spite Marriage, The Cameraman and more. It is an interesting coincidence that Malcolm seems to have regularly worked on Keaton films, and their last names are very similar. If anyone knows more about the Malcolm Eaton, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Note that this window card measures 13 3/4" x 21 3/4". MGM made some "full bleed" window cards at this time that have no white blank borders, and measure slightly smaller, but they are not trimmed.

Condition: good to very good. The card has pinholes in the corners and in the center of the left and right borders. It has stains around the edges of the top blank area, caused by the glue from the snipe. Someone once put masking tape on the back of all four borders to hold plastic over the card, and the plastic is gone, but the tape on the back of the borders remains. There are faint creases in the "E" of "SPITE" and the "MAR" of "MARRIAGE" in the title. There are also creases in the top of the "E" of "KEATON" and in the bottom of the "BU" of "BUSTER". There was once a piece of tape over the artist's signature and the background below it, and the tape is gone, but stains remain in that area. There are some faint smudges and slight unevenness in the orange background. The card has had no restoration. I would think the vast majority of people would be happy to display this wonderful and ultra rare card exactly as it is, or certainly, any talented restorer could perform restoration to the above minor defects, either with or without backing the card.
