An Original Vintage 6" x 8 1/4" [15 x 21 cm] Still (Learn More) John Barrymore was an actor of the 1910s to the 1940s, widely considered to be the finest stage actor of his time! He is also well remembered for his many movies, including: the 1919 version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the 1920 version of Sherlock Holmes, Twentieth Century, Counselor at Law, Dinner at Eight, and Grand Hotel. He was nicknamed "The Great Profile". His brother Lionel, and his sister Ethel, were also extremely accomplished stage and movie actors, and they appeared in a single movie together, Rasputin and the Empress. He had a tumultuous private life, and fought alcoholism, and was married four times. He is the father of John Drew Barrymore, and the grandfather of Drew Barrymore. He passed away in 1942 at the age of 60 AND Lionel Barrymore was an actor from the 1900s to the 1950s. He was the brother of John Barrymore and Ethel Baryrmore. Some of his movies include: Rasputin and the Empress (as Rasputin), It's a Wonderful Life (as Mr. Potter), Free Soul (winner of the Best Actor Academy Award for this film), Madame X (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film), On Borrowed Time, Key Largo, Grand Hotel, Dinner at Eight, Captains Courageous, and as Dr. Gillespie in the many "Dr. Kildare" movies. Note that in his later years, he played most of his performances in a wheelchair, leading many to think he was paralyzed! However, it was a combination of two hip fractures as well as arthritis that limited his mobility in later years (by 1938, Barrymore used a wheelchair exclusively and never walked again). He passed away in 1954 at the age of 76 AND Ethel Barrymore was a legendary actress of the 1910s to the 1950s, who primarily appeared on the stage, but who appeared in several movies over the years, some of which include: Deadline-U.S.A., None But The Lonely Heart (winner of the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for this film), Portrait of Jennie, The Spiral Staircase (nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for this film), The Farmer's Daughter, Pinky (nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for this film), Paradine Case (nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for this film), and Moonrise. She was of course the sister of famed actors Lionel and John Barrymore, and they only appeared in one movie together, "Rasputin and the Empress". Ethel passed away in 1959 at the age of 79.
