Crockwell was an American commercial artist and experimental filmmaker. In the 1930s, he worked for the WPA, and during World War II (WWII), he created recruiting and other posters for various branches of the United States government. He also did many illustrations for The Saturday Evening Post. In 1934, he began making surrealistic "non-representational" films, working in conjunction with David Smith, a sculptor, who created the forms that Crockwell brought to life through stop-motion.
