The Cheat, the 1931 George Abbott pre-Code gambling romantic melodrama ("Based upon the story by Hector Turnbull"; a wild story of a woman whose compulsive gambling brings her marriage and her life to the brink of ruin; she makes matters worse by accepting money from a rich man to bail out her husband, on the condition that she sleep with him by a certain date; her husband makes back all the money, and she goes to the man, trying to repay it, but he wants what she promised, and she kills him and her husband nobly pretends that he is the murderer!) starring Tallulah Bankhead, Irving Pichel, Harvey Stephens, Jay Fasset, Ann Andrews, and William Ingersoll. Note that this is one of just six movies legendary stage actress Tallulah Bankhead made in the early 1930s, and it is easy to see why she was perfect for this role!
