An Original Vintage Theatrical Unfolded Insert Movie Poster (measures 14" x 36" [36 x 91 cm]) (Learn More)

Foreign Devils, the 1927 W.S. Van Dyke silent China Boxer Rebellion military war melodrama (about an attache at the American Embassy in Peking during the Boxer Rebellion, and he not only saves a pretty Englishwoman, but he pretty much defeats the rebels single-handedly!) starring Tim McCoy, Claire Windsor, Cyril Chadwick, Frank Currier, and Emily Fitzroy. Note that director W.S. Van Dyke had gotten his start as an assistant on D.W. Griffith's "Intolerance" in 1916, and the following year, he was a director of many movies. He directed many westerns and other movies throughout the 1920s, and in 1928, he got his second big break when he helped Robert Flaherty direct "Shadows in the South Seas", and the following year, he was signed by MGM to make "Trader Horn", but it took two years to complete due to all the complications of location filming. The following year, he directed "Tarzan the Ape Man", and the huge success of that movie made him one of the top directors of the 1930s. Note that this is a "lost" film, which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist.

Important Added Info: Note that this poster is from a remarkable group of mid-1920s inserts that has just been discovered! There are twelve of them, and we are auctioning them this week in twelve separate auctions, at the start of our listings. While the poster has never been folded, it is 83 years old, so we would not want to attempt to roll it, so it will be sent in a large flat package. This will cost more than our standard size packages, so for this poster, and the other eleven inserts we are auctioning this week, the buyer will need to pay the actual cost of shipping for this poster (and of course, if this poster is purchased with other inserts, they can all be sent together in a single flat package).

Condition: fair. The poster was never folded. There is a 6" vertical area of cutting and small paper loss in the center of the title. There is a great deal of dirt staining scattered down the left side of the poster, and a much lesser amount on the right side. The poster could be paperbacked by a talented restorer, and it might well require less paint restoration in the image than one might think, because most of the restoration would be removing the stains, which mostly could be done through chemical means (but some degree of the staining would likely not come out, and then a talented restorer could do touch up to the cleaned poster).
