An Original Vintage Television Script (measures 8 1/2" x 11" [22 x 28 cm], 76 pages) (Learn More) That Certain Summer, the 1972 Lamont Johnson made-for-TV homosexual gay divorce family relationship coming-out melodrama starring Hal Holbrook, Martin Sheen, Joe Don Baker, Marlyn Mason, Scott Jacoby, and Hope Lange. Note that this was the first made-for-television film to tackle the subject of homosexuality, with major stars in the lead roles (and it was especially daring for Hal Holbrook and Martin Sheen to play gay men at a time when it might have meant the end of their careers). Also note that there are pink revision pages from 5/4/72. Note that the script has several pencil notations in the final scenes and they are all written next to lines for the character named "Doug", which was Hal Holbrook's character, and they are written in the first person, so it seems quite likely this script was Hal Holbrook's personal script. This includes an entire paragraph next to the dialog where Doug says "A lot of people - most people I guess - think it's wrong. But to me, it's just... another way of loving. Nobody chooses it, it's not something you pick for yourself, but when it happens...". The person who wrote the pencil writing (next to the above dialog) "They say it's a sickness. They say it's something that has to be cured. I don't know. I do know it isn't easy. If I had a choice, it's not something I'd pick for myself. But it's the only way I can live...". Also, next to a conversation where Doug talks about quitting smoking, the person who wrote the pencil writing wrote "If there is any way for me not to have this conversation, I wouldn't". So this is a fascinating look into what the actors were thinking at the time of the filming of this most sensitive (and groundbreaking) made-for-TV movie. Condition: good to very good.
