An Original Theatrical Linenbacked International One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More)

Too Hot to Handle (released in the U.S. in 1962 as "Playgirl After Dark"), the 1960 Terence Young English sexploitation exotic dancer stripper bad girl crime thriller ("It strips the secrets from the intimate key clubs!"; "The girls who rock the night as tease queens!"; "The sizzler you read about in Playboy Magazine!"; "In the naked glare of the Key Clubs... A glamorous, amorous girl world for pleasure hunters!") starring Jayne Mansfield, Leo Glenn, Karlheinz Bohm (billed as "Carl Boehm"), Christopher Lee, Kai Fischer, and Danik Patisson (billed as "introducing Danik Patisson"). Note that this movie was a gritty English crime thriller, but when it was released in the U.S., the U.S. distributor wisely seized on what they believed to be the film's greatest asset, namely Jayne Mansfield's body, and they re-named it "Playgirl After Dark", and put a large near-naked image of Mansfield on the posters, and made it look like it was some kind of sex film that revolved around her (I would highly doubt that that was not a wise move on their part!). Oddly, when the film was re-released in the 1960s, the original English title of "Too Hot To Handle" was used.

Important Added Info: Note that this is a poster that was printed by MGM for a European movie that they distributed in the U.S. Somewhere in the early 1960s, MGM apparently made a huge "trade" deal with European movie distributors. From the early 1960s to the late 1960s, MGM released 100 or more non-U.S. movies in the U.S. under the MGM logo (some dating back to the 1950s), and in return, they apparently gave 100 or more MGM movies (from the 1950s and early 1960s) to those European distributors to release in Europe. All of the posters from both sets of releases have a very similar type of somewhat garish, very colorful artwork, and some have an MGM logo that is different from than on other MGM movies of the same time period, which makes it likely that those (with different logos) are from re-releases. None of these posters (except for the very first few of them) have any dates on them. In the case of this particular poster, it has a litho number, and we can date it to 1962, so it is from the first release of this movie. Over the years, I have seen many of these posters (from both types) sold as first release, but, as stated above, some of these are mid to late 1960s re-releases, and the ones from U.S. movies are "international" posters (or lobby cards) that were used in non-U.S. countries. If anyone knows more about these MGM releases, please e-mail us.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had paper loss at the top crossfold and small paper loss at the other two crossfolds. It had small tears, creases, and some tiny bits of paper loss on parts of some folds, and pinholes, tears, and small paper loss around the edges. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects.
