Date Sold 10/15/2009Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41") (Learn More) a circa 1940s (some collectors say it is from 1948) "stock" poster created by Favorite Films for use by theaters showing re-releases of their 1930s and 1940s Laurel & Hardy movies in 1940s ("Every minute a laugh.. Every laugh a howl!"). Theaters would order this poster, which has a large blank area at the bottom. Sometimes the studio would overprint the stock poster with the title of a specific movie, and sometimes they sent a series of large paper snipes with the titles of specific entries of the series, so the theater could paste in each snipe as needed, thus getting many posters for the price of one. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this poster was used in another country, and a foreign language title and taglines were painted in the bottom of the poster in black paint. Condition: fair. This poster has been linenbacked, but it was not very well done, likely both because the restorer did not do a good job at all, and because the years since it has been linenbacked have not been kind to the poster. Overall, the poster was in fair to good condition prior to linenbacking. Generally, it had paper loss at the crossfolds and creases, tears, and areas of paper loss on parts of most foldlines, with some smudges and stains scattered throughout the poster. The poster was not well backed at all, because you can still see some or all of the defects generally described above (in some cases, as should be immediately evident in our image, the linenbacker did no restoration to some of the defects), and if there was restoration of the above defects, it was not done very well. Certainly, a talented restorer could perform additional restoration (either with or without re-backing the poster), but it might be fairly expensive to have this done, so bear that in mind before you place a bid.
