Date Sold 11/2/2010Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Pressbook (pb; measures 14" x 18" [36 x 46 cm]; 24 pages). Also included is a herald that has 4 pages (Learn More) The Day the Earth Stood Still, the classic 1951 Robert Wise science fiction (sci-fi) alien-contact thriller ("From out of space.... a warning and an ultimatum!"; "Strange power from another planet menaces the Earth!"; from the story by Harry Bates; about a super intelligent alien visiting the Earth, and mankind mistrusts him without reason; he is able to "pass" as a human, and he visits the world's greatest scientist, and when he is injured and taken to a hospital, he is rescued by his robot Gort) starring Michael Rennie (as Klaatu), Patricia Neal, Hugh Marlowe, Sam Jaffe, Billy Gray, Frances Bavier, and Lock Martin (as Gort the Robot). Note that the unusual music heard in this movie was achieved through the use of the musical instrument called a theramin, and audiences loved the eerie sounds it made, and it became standard in many science fiction movies thereafter to use this instrument in the same way! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: NOTE THAT THIS PRESSBOOK CONTAINS THE "BOUND IN" NEWSPAPER STYLE HERALD THAT IS OFTEN ABSENT FROM THIS PRESSBOOK (see below)! Note that this pressbook was folded across the center at one time. Because of this, this pressbook can be sent in one of our standard size packages (if it is purchased together with pressbooks that can NOT be folded, then it will of course have to be sent in one of our oversized packages). But if this pressbook is purchased by itself (or solely with other pressbooks that can be folded), then the shipping will be much lower, because it fits in a standard package. Also note that when studios would prepare pressbooks they would often include a sample of the herald. Most often, the herald is no longer still with the pressbook. Sometimes, the herald by itself will sell for almost as much as the rest of the entire pressbook! This pressbook contains the original herald that was included with it. Also Note that we have provided an image of the front and back covers of the pressbook, plus an image of an inside spread, but of course, the winner of this auction will receive the entire single pressbook we are selling (plus any supplements or heralds)! Finally, note that this pressbook is complete and uncut! Given that theater owners purchased pressbooks partly in order to create their newspaper advertising, and quite frequently cut them up for that purpose, it is rare to find a pressbook that IS complete and uncut! Condition: good, NO CUTS. The pressbook has several tape repairs on the inside along the spine and there are a few tears in the pages at left and right with some clear tape repairs on the inside of the pressbook. The pressbook was oddly folded at one time and there are slightly diagonal creases at upper right and lower center. There is tattering and small paper loss along the horizontal foldline on the cover as well as some tattering and paper loss around the edges of the pages of the pressbook. The pressbook is complete and uncut (and makes for very interesting reading) but please do not bid unless you can accept that there are tape repairs and some areas of tattering throughout!
