An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 28 1/4" x 42 1/2" [72 x 108 cm]) (Learn More) Way For a Sailor, the 1930 Sam Wood Navy Naval romantic sailing melodrama ("Metro-Goldwyn Mayer All Talking Picture"; "From the book by Albert Richard Wetjen") starring John Gilbert, Wallace Beery, Jim Tully, Leila Hyams, and Polly Moran. Note that this John Gilbert sound movie, like all his sound movies, completely dispels the myth that he had a high-pitched speaking voice, which ended his career! Actually, he had a fine speaking voice, and there is much speculation as to what it was that actually ended his career, and that can be found in various places on the Internet, but it was definitely not his voice! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare poster that we have never auctioned before, and we have only auctioned a few stills, one lobby card and one glass slide for this film and no other movie paper for it in all our years of auctioning! Note also that this one-sheet measures 28 1/4" x 42 1/2" [72 x 108 cm]. In the late 1910s through the early 1930s, MGM (and sometimes Paramount and a couple of other studios) would often make a regular one-sheet for a movie and, instead of a second style regular one-sheet, would instead make a special "rotogravure" one-sheet. Named after the rotogravure picture sections at the time popular in Sunday newspapers, these one-sheets would be printed in a single color, often sepia, but sometimes other colors, and they would usually incorporate pictorial images from the movie combined in a montage fashion. Very few rotogravure one-sheet have survived, since they were printed on the same paper stock used in newspapers of the time, and the paper is very fragile and often darkens. Condition: fair to good. The poster is mostly separated in the right of the middle fold with separation at the top and bottom folds. It is lightly rippled in large area due to water staining, which is much more noticeable from the back of the poster. This is the kind of poster that responds really well to restoration. It is likely that many or most of the water staining can be removed chemically, and after proper restoration the poster will display well, but bear in mind the poster's condition and the cost of restoration before bidding on it.
