Date Sold 5/27/2018Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Autographed 8" x 9 3/4" [20 x 25 cm] Publicity Still (Learn More) Viola Dana (born Virginia Flugrath) was an actress from the 1910s to the 1930s. She is one of three acting sisters. Viola wisely changed her name from Virginia Flugrath, and her sister Shirley Mason also changed her name, but the third sister, Edna Flugrath, did not, which likely did not help her career. She was just 13 when she had her first movie role in a short subject adaptation of "A Christmas Carol", but by 1915, she was a leading star. She married director John Collins that year, but he died in the flu epidemic of 1918. She then had a romantic relationship with famed daredevil pilot Ormer Locklear (who was married), and he died performing a plane stunt in 1920, and Miss Dana was a witness to it. She married two more times and was a star through the 1920s, making a few appearances in 1930s movies. She then retired, except for a brief appearance in the documentary "Buster Keaton: A Hard Act to Follow", made the year after her passing in 1987, at the age of 90. Important Added Info: Note that this still has been personally autographed (signed) by Viola Dana! Also note that this still measures 8" x 9 3/4" [20 x 25 cm], but it has not been trimmed. Finally, note that many celebrities kept multiple 8" x 10" (or smaller) copies of good publicity images of themselves to sign for fans, and also many memorabilia shops sold such copy stills themselves. While they are not original theater-used stills, they are usually excellent clear copies, with a great shot of that celebrity in their heyday, which, when signed by the celebrity, makes for a wonderful framed picture on any fan's wall! The consignor of this autographed item (and a large number of other signed items in this auction) is a longtime autograph collector who does not have a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) for this item, but he feels certain it is genuine. Many of the items he has consigned were purchased from an autograph store that was going out of business when the owner retired, and many of the items he has consigned to this set of auctions come from this purchase. As is true of all the signed items we are currently auctioning, we give every buyer 30 days in which to review what they purchased and they can return any item as long as it is within 30 days of the end of the auction. On non-signed items, we give a "lifetime guarantee" on everything we auction, but on signed items, we give the above modified guarantee of 30 days after the auction closes.
