Poilu (which literally meant "hairy") was also French military slang for a soldier, and many posters were created to promote these fundraising days. Artist: Lucien-Hector Jonas Important Added Info: Note that this poster features a quote from French statesman Leon Gambetta, who was a hero of the Franco-Prussian War. It translates to "With you and by you we will vow to save France." What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had was many years ago mounted onto a very thin linen with no excess. It had darkening around the edges but was otherwise in pretty nice condition prior to linenbacking. At some point over the years, it acquired creases in the top and bottom, and water staining in two areas on the back of the bottom, and on the back of the top 8" of the right border, and some scattered light staining to the right of that on the back of the poster. Someone also attached seven round stickers to the back of the top of the poster that helped attach it to a wall. The poster could be displayed as it is, or certainly, it could be removed from the thin linen and re-backed, but bear in mind its condition defects and the potential cost of re-backing it before bidding on it.
