An Original Vintage Linenbacked Belgian Advertising Poster (measures 24 1/2" x 33 1/4") (Learn More) Socovel was a Belgian brand of mopeds and motorcycles which was founded in 1938 by Maurice and Albert de Limelette. Their first products were electric motorcycles and they continued production during World War II (WWII) with the permission of the Germans. Petrol rationing during the war likely helped with the sale of their products but the company had to start using conventional two-stroke engines in the post-war world. The rise of cheaper automobiles resulted in the company going out of business around 1960 If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: What IS linenbacking? "Linenbacking" is a process that is used to preserve movie posters (the best restorers de-acidify the poster during the restoration process), and to make them far easier to display (it is much easier and less expensive to frame a linenbacked poster). When linenbacking is done correctly, it adds to the value of the poster, and is NOT a defect! Note that the specific poster in this auction was well linenbacked, but the restorer did not attempt to make the poster look "perfect". You may still see some slight evidence of the restoration and/or the defects when you look at the poster from inches away, and you may be able to see slight signs of restoration even from a distance. But the poster now looks quite nice, and I think most collectors would be quite happy to display this poster on their wall. In general, know that we received many of the linenbacked posters we are currently selling already linenbacked, but we have examined every poster EXTREMELY carefully, and we did our best to describe what condition the poster was in PRIOR to restoration, the defects the poster had PRIOR to restoration (in the "Pre-Restoration Defects & Quality of Restoration" section), any unrestored defects, and, when it seemed worth noting, something about the quality of the restoration itself. Many other auction houses claim to match what we do in this area, but EVERY person who regularly buys movie posters from major auctions can tell you this is just not the case! We never intentionally overgrade a single item, we never "accidentally" miss defects, and we never enhance a single image! Condition: very good. The poster was never folded and it had the most minor of border wear. Overall, the poster was in very good to fine condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well! Note that the poster is slightly "lifting" from the linen in parts of the borders (any restorer could re-attach it without re-backing the poster). Learn More about condition grades
