Note that this movie was unsuccessful when it was released in 1953, but in the 1960s, French critics proclaimed it a masterpiece! Finally, note that this movie was made during the period (1950-1955) when Bergman was living in exile from the U.S., because of her affair with Rossellini that produced a child, after which she moved to Italy with him and he directed her in several movies.
