An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Trolley Card (measures 21" x 27" [53 x 69 cm]) (Learn More)

The Phantom of Paris, the 1931 John S. Robertson France escape artist crime murder mystery romantic melodrama (based on the novel 'Cheri-Bibi' by Gaston Leroux; about a famous escape artist who is falsely charged with a murder, and of course, he is incredibly difficult to keep in prison, and he desperately wants to escape so that he can clear his name, and of course, he does!) starring John Gilbert (as Cheri-Bibi, the escape artist), Leila Hyams, Lewis Stone, Jean Hersholt, C. Aubrey Smith, and Natalie Moorhead. Note that this John Gilbert sound movie, like all his sound movies, completely dispels the myth that he had a high-pitched speaking voice, which ended his career! Actually, he had a fine speaking voice, and there is much speculation as to what it was that actually ended his career, and that can be found in various places on the Internet, but it was definitely not his voice! Also note that the source novel for this movie was written in 1913 by Gaston Leroux, who had three years earlier written one of the most famous novels of all time, "Le fantome de l'Opera", known in English-speaking countries as "The Phantom of the Opera".

Important Added Info: Note that first release 1931 movie paper from this John Gilbert movie is incredibly rare. We have never auctioned even a single poster from this movie (only a few stills) until we received this trolley card! Also note that this poster can't be rolled and must be sent in a very large flat package. Please bear that expense in mind before placing a bid on this poster.

Condition: very good. There is slight darkening around the edges of the blank borders and a few faint smudges and scuffs scattered throughout, but nothing serious. The card will display well as it is. Note that it might appear like there are some sort of stains in Gilbert's face, but those are in the printing and are not any sort of defect (and from a reasonable viewing distance, they do not look like a "defect" either)
