He was born in 1914 and became a stage actor in the mid 1930s, appearing in a touring Shakespearean company. He made it to Broadway in 1938, and later that year, he moved to California, where James Cagney "discovered" him in a Los Angeles play, and cast him as his brother in 1940's "City for Conquest". He was signed by Warner Bros. and made supporting appearances in a number of their A-movies. He then served in World War II, and after, he went back to the Broadway stage, sand starred in "All My Sons" and "The Crucible". In the late 1940s, he returned to Hollywood, becoming one of the top character actors of the late 1940s and 1950s, with important roles in films which included: Boomerang, The Champion (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film), The Glass Menagerie, Trial (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film), Some Came Running (nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film), Bright Victory (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; as a blinded World War II veteran; he won the New York Film Critics' Circle Award for this role). He continued to act throughout the 1950s and 1960s, making some appearances in top movies like "Lawrence of Arabia". He switched to TV until he retired in the mid 1980s. He passed away in 1990 at the age of 75. Important Added Info: Note that this is a special lot of "portrait" stills that were consigned to us by an individual who collected portraits of stars he liked over many decades! Each of the lots contain a number of ORIGINAL stills of a well known celebrity (there are 40 lots in all, and each is in its own auction), and the star is prominently pictured in ALL of the stills in that lot! Each of the lots contain a wide variety of stills of that particular star, covering different movies they made, and from different points in their career. Please note: many of these stills are in SUCH excellent condition that a person viewing them might well wonder if they are reproductions, but we assure you they are not! They were purchased decades ago (in many cases, when the movies came out), and they were in "brand new" condition at that time, and have been carefully stored ever since, so that explains why the condition is SO fine (and it also means this is a really rare opportunity to acquire multiple ORIGINAL portraits of a single star (there are NO repros in any of the lots)! Condition: very good to fine. Note that three of the stills are key book stills, two of the stills are deluxe (printed on a heavyweight stock), and one of the photos is printed on Kodak stock (but it has a snipe on the back, and we believe it to be original).
